NIMROD TEAM MEETING

13 NOVEMBER 1999

8:30 AM - 5 PM PST

14 NOVEMBER 1999

8:30 AM - 1200 PST

ST. HELENS ROOM

WESTIN HOTEL

SEATTLE, WA

Continental breakfast will be available in the St. Helens room at 7:30

am both days. Coffee break service will be provided at about 1:30 pm

on Saturday. Due to exhorbitant catering costs at the Westin, THERE

WILL BE NO LUNCH SERVED EITHER DAY. We'll be on our own!

Good presentations!

11:30 am - 1:30 pm BREAK FOR LUNCH

1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

II.Discussion of other ongoing applications

- Rick N.

2-Fluid in RFPs:

2 -fluid effects generate background flows comparable to the flow in

the modes. The flow is sheared (no net momentum). Appears to be a

quasi-linear effect. Has found a suspicious 1/12 mode. Is it real or

is it memorex?

"We'll figure it out." - Carl S.

- Michael Kissick

Michael presented an interesting plot showing the limitations of NIMROD

woth flow. High flow and high S don't work. Some suggestions were

meade te Michael will make, like running with si_in_v=false, etc. We

all appreciate Michael's patience with us. We are committed to slving

this problem.

- Eric Held

Presented some plans for including his thesis collisionless closure for

the heat flux into NIMROD.

- Alfonso

DIII-D high-beta disruption. The straight-line grid has cured the

problem of the numerical mode with Pr=1000. With Pr=10 the bad mode

returns even at beta_n=5. We may not have the "cure" yet.

2:30 PM - 5:00 PM

II. Development

- AZTEC (Steve P.)

Good news: Fully implementd in the code.

Bad news: Can't compete with the present line preconditioners.

- Higher order elements (Carl)

Status:

- Nimset complete

- Nimplot complete

- Nimrod partially functional. Still needs

- Degenerate point

- Regularity conditions

- Parallel seaming

- Extrapolation routines

- Preconditioner development

- CFL condition

- Use of higher order definitions in diagnostics

- Functional form of rz

- Optimization

- Quad. basis definitions exist for orders 1 and 2

- Polynomial orders > 1 not implemented for tblocks

Initial tests show that biquadratic representation is much more

accurate for slab tearing mode. Need degenerate point capability to do

more realistic cases (like a tearing mode in a cylinder).

- Reset capability (Tom)

Exists in Nimset. Tom has found a clever way to search a grid to

answer the question "What cell is a point (r,z) in?". Will allow

complete re-gridding and/or resetting the polynomial order.

- Kinetic closures/particles (Scott P.)

Scott and his graduate student have made progress in the mechanics of

pushing particles in the Nimrod fields.

- Computations on tblocks (Alfonso)

Can't tell from the results presented.

- Pre-processing and web site issues (Scott K.)

Changes to Fluxgrid and the web page were described.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14

8:30 am - 9:30 am

III. Other technical Issues

- Xdraw (new versions)

Scott presented Nina's results. She has done an excellent job.

9:30 am - 11:00 am

IV. Develop plans and goals for next 3 months

As a reminder, here are the goals that we set last June. Please be

prepared to report on their status.
